At the ongoing UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) at Expo City Dubai on Sunday, Secretary-General António Guterres met with the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The UN Secretary-General and the President spoke about topics on the COP28 agenda and how crucial the conference is to strengthening international cooperation to address climate challenges in a way that benefits present and future generations.

The UN Secretary-General applauded Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s plan to create a $30 billion fund for global climate solutions in order to close the finance gap and enable accessible, affordable climate solutions.

The discussion also covered collaboration between the UAE and UN agencies, namely in promoting global peace, climate action, sustainable development, and regional and global humanitarian efforts.

A variety of other regional and global problems of shared interest were also discussed, with a focus on developments in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. They emphasized the necessity of international action to bring about a truce in the Gaza Strip, safeguard people, avoid forcibly displacing them, and guarantee the secure, ongoing, and widespread distribution of humanitarian aid.

Furthermore, it was discussed that attaining regional stability, establishing an atmosphere that is favorable to increased cooperation in the Middle East, and promoting the development and prosperity of its peoples depend on efforts to stop the escalation of regional conflict and work towards peace based on the two-state solution.
