Big Ben smashed up after work of £80million. A Footage has appears that showed scaffolding striking Big Ben some days after the result of its £80million five-year makeover was revealed.
On Saturday Sarah Haynes filmed the scene when the metal girder appeared to impact the iconic London’s landmark.
Big Ben had been hidden behind the scaffolding from last five years as its makeover works took place and there seemed to be a tense moment when a bit of scaffolding smashed near the building due to the wind.
According to Sarah’s statement, “We could see they were trying to remove this massive piece of scaffolding. It kept hitting the building which has just been renovated for millions. It hit the tower and we didn’t see anything fall but it made quite a thump.”
The renovations started on Big Ben in 2017 and this project which was initially expected to cost £29million, but somehow reached a price tag of £80million.
The Big Ben’s bell could be heard for the first time since makeover began on New Year’s Eve, chiming twelve times.
As, the clock and tower have finally fully revealed to the public again but, this incident shows, the hard work isn’t over yet.
Sarah, said: “We were in London for a weekend and visited the Houses of Parliament for a tour. As we were leaving out of the entrance, we could see all of the builders looking up and the odd workman running around looking frantic.”
She added, “There was a man in a cherry picker which was as high as they could get it and he was leaning over the edge pushing it away from the building. It kept looking like it was going to hit the building again but he was quite good at pushing it away.”
“It’s been tarted up for years and has been revealed just in time for the Platinum Jubilee and yet this bit of scaffolding kept hitting it on the way down. It took a long time but eventually they managed to get it down.”
