A military source told Syria’s official news agency SANA that Syrian air defence intercepted Israeli missiles south of Damascus on Monday, with no deaths reported.

“The Israeli enemy launched an airstrike from the occupied Syrian Golan,” a military source told SANA, adding that Syria’s air defence intercepted the majority of the missiles.

“Material damage was the extent of the losses.”
In the evening, an AFP correspondent in Damascus heard loud explosions.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the bombing targeted facilities in the southern Damascus countryside where the Lebanese Hezbollah group and Syrian air defence forces are engaged.

According to the Observatory, which has a large network of informants within Syria, Israeli surface-to-surface missiles killed at least three Syrian officers near Damascus last month.

Since the Syrian civil war began in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes against its neighbour. The Israeli military has defended them as necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring a foothold on Israel’s southern border.

Syria’s civil war has killed about half a million people and displaced roughly half of the country’s pre-war population.
