Washington: A six-year-old child in the eastern US state of Virginia opened fire in a classroom at an elementary school on Friday, badly injuring a teacher, according to the police.

“The student involved is six years old. Steve Drew, the local police chief, stated at a news conference that “this was not an accident shooting” and that “he is currently in police custody.”

According to police, the victim was a 30-year-old teacher whose injuries were life-threatening.

“I’m in shock, and I’m disheartened,” said the city’s superintendent of schools, George Parker.

“We need the community’s support to make sure that guns are not available to youth.”

The recent tragedy of an 18-year-old gunman killing 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas last May is only one example of the tragic trend of school shootings in the US.

According to the Gun Violence Archive database, there were an estimated 44,000 gun-related deaths in the US every year, with half of those deaths occurring as a result of homicide, accidents, or self-defense, and the other half as a result of suicide.
