KARACHI: A powerful suicide bomb exploded in Karachi on Sunday night, targeting a convoy carrying Chinese nationals. The attack claimed at least three lives and injured 10 others.
The Chinese Embassy in Islamabad condemned the "terrorist attack" in a statement, confirming the deaths of two Chinese citizens and reporting that one was injured. The embassy extended its condolences to the victims' families and said it was cooperating with Pakistani authorities on the matter.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack and instructed security forces to ensure those responsible are held accountable. The country's Foreign Ministry also condemned the incident, calling it an attack not only on Pakistan but on its long-standing friendship with China.
According to initial reports, the suicide bomber had been waiting near Jinnah airport for the convoy to approach before striking. Investigators stated that the attacker drove an explosive-laden vehicle directly into the car transporting the Chinese nationals, causing significant destruction and damaging several nearby vehicles.
Rescue teams arrived promptly after the explosion and managed to secure one of the foreign nationals' vehicles. Authorities are now working to retrieve the number plate and engine chassis numbers to assist in the investigation. Efforts are also underway to gather more information about the damaged vehicles.
The powerful blast, heard from miles away, took place outside the airport. However, officials confirmed that airport facilities remained secure and flight operations were unaffected.
