Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy are members of the comic troupe known as Please Don’t Destroy, and they have taken their absurdist perspective to Saturday Night Live (SNL). Normally, their sketches feature something utterly absurd, like an absurd animal or someone who keeps popping up, but this time, they chose to take advantage of the host. or at least his willingness to serve as their replacement “Ben” Woody Harrelson’s companions are being watched while Marshall and the host are on a stakeout in a car.

Marshall comes to the realization that he may not be all that essential to his pals, or perhaps he is, and they are worried about losing him if he learns that they are dating and have a large, undiscovered family together. He initially assumes that his pals are simply hanging out without him, but once they kiss, their secret family gradually becomes apparent. They have numerous children and appear to have told everyone—apart from Marshall—about it.

As “Uncle” Kenan Thompson arrives, Marshall watches as everyone ignores him, throws their phones in the trash when he texts them and enjoys themselves. Harrelson is thankfully there, attempting to be his rock. Seeing that his buddies are actually interviewing different people to replace them with a “new” Ben pushes him over the edge, though.

He confronts them, and Higgins and Herlihy both claim that they cannot possibly replace him because there is only one Marshall. Nevertheless, as the camera pans, it becomes clear that they have found a replacement “Ben” in the form of Harrelson donning a red wig. The comedy succeeds because Marshall convincingly portrays a distressed friend, and Harrelson is prepared to “make it look like a heist” when Higgins and Herhily are initially assumed to be simply hanging out without Marshall. The way Higgins and Herhily try to explain away getting rid of their friend and keeping him out of things is humorous as well.

Another of the bizarre Please Don’t Destroy sketches that viewers have come to expect, it’s fascinating to see them scheming behind Marshall’s back to create their perfect family with a new “Ben” in their lives—even if it’s Harrelson. See the most recent sketch below:
