It isn’t a secret. Thor: Ragnarok marked a dramatic shift from the previous two pictures. While Thor and Thor: The Dark World focused on Shakespearean aspects of Thor Odinson and Norse mythology, Taika Waititi’s Ragnarok immersed the character in a live-action Kirbian cosmic opera.

Before working with Waititi, Chris Hemsworth admitted that he was bored with the character. Hemsworth has grown into his role as one of the original Avengers as the Marvel universe has progressed through its stages, with the actor now set to participate in Thor: Love and Thunder, his eighth appearance in the MCU. Hemsworth highlighted his previous reservations about Thor as a character in a recent interview with Vanity Fair to reflect on his career, and how Waititi eventually worked with him to alleviate these concerns.
The actor revealed his displeasure with his role in Thor: The Dark World, claiming that he did not let the character to grow in any way. “I really wanted to break the mould,” He told Screenrant, “and I stated this to Taika and I think the conversation we had was I said, “I’m really bored of Thor,” and Chris said, “Yeah, I’m really bored of Thor too.” ” And then we decided not to be bored and anytime that feeling came into play, we’d go in a different direction.”
He went on to say, “We wanted to have him be a little more unpredictable. We wanted him to be in a different set of circumstances than he’d been in before and also have the humor come through.” While Thor may be unrecognizable from his 2011 iteration, pieces of his past are likely to resurface in Thor: Love and Thunder, when his former love Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, makes a cameo appearance. Thor: Ragnarok will be released in theatres on July 7th.
