A Singaporean man has admitted being guilty in the US to working as an agent of China.

US officials said that Jun Wei Yeo was accused of using his political consultancy in the US as a front to gather data for Chinese intelligence.

Jun Wei Yeo pleaded guilty in the federal court to be serving as an illegal agent of the Chinese government in 2015-19.

He was earlier accused of collecting confidential information using his political consultancy as a front.

He admitted that he scouted for Americans with high-level security clearance and persuading them to write reports for fake clients.

He was arrested as he arrived in the US in 2019.

Tensions between China and the US increases; China earlier ordered the closure of the US consulate in Chengdu. On the contrary, China’s consulate in Houston was closed by the US.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo explained that China was stealing intellectual property.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin had replied that the US decision was based on “a hodgepodge of anti-Chinese lies”.

Four Chinese nationals have been charged with visa fraud by the US for allegedly lying about their membership in the armed forces of China.

Three nationals have been arrested whereas the FBI is working to arrest the fourth one, who is said to be staying in China’s San Francisco consulate.

People in 25 US cities have been interviewed by the FBI. These people have an “undeclared affiliation” with China’s forces.

Prosecutors claim that it is part of a Chinese plan to send army scientists to the US.
