Man arrested over John Caldwell shooting claim

In connection with a claim of responsibility for the shooting of Det Ch Insp John Caldwell in Omagh last month, a 25-year-old man has been detained.

The attack left the senior police officer with permanent injuries.

Police have him in custody in connection with a false security warning that occurred in Londonderry last month.

Chris Heaton-Harris, the secretary for Northern Ireland, was present when it took place just before a football game.

On February 22, Det Ch Insp Caldwell was shot in a sports complex parking lot in Omagh, County Tyrone, in front of his young son.

Investigators suspect the New IRA, a republican dissident group, was responsible for the assault.

In a typed statement that was affixed on a wall next to stores in the Creggan district in Londonderry, an acknowledgment of responsibility for the shooting was made.
