After supporting requests to ban a film about the Prophet Mohammed’s daughter, an imam was fired as a government consultant. After protests against the film The Lady of Heaven, Qari Asim, 44; was fired from his job as an Islamophobia consultant. According to the government, he was barred from continuing because he supported a campaign “to curb free expression.”

In 2012, Mr Asim was awarded an MBE for his work in promoting “community peace” in Leeds. Following protests outside a number of cinemas, Cineworld announced; that all UK showing of the film will be cancelled. Mr Asim, the imam of Leeds’ Makkah Masjid mosque, was notified by the Department of Levelling Up, Housing & Communities that his position as deputy head of the government’s Anti-Muslim Hatred Working Group would have to cease in a letter.
