Uvalde atrocity: tens of thousands of people are to gather in the US to protest gun violence

Tens of thousands of demonstrators are expected to rally in Washington, DC, and across the US.
March for Our Lives was founded by student survivors of a 2018 massacre at a high school in Florida.
The group’s 2018 march on Washington brought more than 200,000 people to the US capital.

Demonstrators are expected to take to the streets in cities around the United States to demand tighter gun control legislation. Following the recent killing of students and teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

According to March for Our Lives, a gun safety organisation created by student survivors of a 2018 high school massacre in Florida; more than 450 protests are planned for Saturday, including gatherings in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Demonstrators have a straightforward message for US political leaders: Your inactivity is killing Americans. In an emailed statement, Trevon Bosley, a board member of the group, said, “We will no longer allow you to sit back as people continue to die.”

The group’s 2018 march on Washington drew more than 200,000 people to the US capital; just weeks after 17 people were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida to pressure Congress to enact sweeping reforms though Republican opposition; has prevented any new gun restrictions from passing the US Senate.
