A Georgia family discovered a Burmese python on their yard after their dog caused a late-night commotion in the backyard.
Paul Hernandez of Marietta claimed his family’s beloved dog, Alaska, began barking loudly on the back porch early Wednesday morning.
Hernandez told the media, “I hear my dog barking, and I went outside and there was something black on her bed that she usually sleeps on and she was barking at it.”
He added, “She looked like she was trying to not eat it, but she looked like she just wouldn’t leave it alone.”
Hernandez claimed he went inside the home to fetch his phone so he could use the flashlight to get a closer look at the item.
He stated, “I turned it on and it was a snake, it didn’t look like a snake I had ever seen before.”
Hernandez took Alaska outdoors and waited for his father, Ben, to awaken about 7:00 a.m. The snake was now crawling on a chair, so the father and son walked out to the backyard to find it.
As per Ben Hernandez,”When I saw her, I knew she was a Burmese python because I have seen them on TV shows,”
The snake was taken into custody by animal control, who confirmed it was a Burmese python.
Although Burmese pythons are not native to the United States, they have formed a natural population in Florida, where they are classified as invasive species.
The snake was most likely an escaped pet, according to animal control authorities.
According to Ben Hernandez of the animal control officer, “He said that it was probably somebody’s pet the way she acted when he grabbed it.”
He added, “She was not aggressive at all, so she’s used to people.”
The snake is being held at an animal control facility until its owner can be found.
