Korean researchers have developed a battery that bends and stretches like a snake and might be useful in wearable gadgets.
Korean researchers have invented a battery that “bends and stretches like a snake.”
The example of a battery is supposed to imitate the movement of snake scales and is thought to be totally safe.
“Mimicking snake scales helped them developed a battery that was flexible, stretchable, and safe to use,” said Dr. Bongkyun Jang, a senior researcher at the institute’s Department of Nano Mechanics who co-led the research.
The battery is different from those used in most wearable devices because the frame and battery must fit together tightly.
“By combining numerous tiny, stiff batteries in a scale-like framework, this innovative gadget allows for flexible movement. The construction was optimized to minimize deformation of the material used to make the battery, ensuring its safety. Each battery cell’s form is optimized for optimum capacity per unit size,” according to media.
In a publication about the innovation, scientists from the institution described their suggestions.
“This study proposes a novel structure with individual, overlapping units, similar to snake scales that can be used to construct shape-morphing batteries for untethered soft robots,” they said.
