Tatsuya Nagamine, the renowned Japanese animation director, has died at the age of 53, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable contributions to the anime industry.
Nagamine was celebrated as one of Toei Animation’s most talented and dependable creative minds. He gained global recognition for his direction of One Piece Film: Z, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, and the critically acclaimed Wano Arc of One Piece.

His work on the Wano Arc was particularly praised for elevating the anime’s visual storytelling and redefining its artistic tone. He also contributed to other major titles, including Yes! Precure 5, further establishing his reputation as a visionary director.
According to a statement on his official X account, Nagamine’s family shared, “Thank you always for your support. He had been undergoing medical treatment since last year, but he passed away on August 20 at the age of 53.” The family noted that his funeral was held quietly with only close relatives in attendance.
On November 13, a private memorial service was organized at Toei Animation. His family expressed gratitude, saying, “We sincerely thank everyone who attended and deeply appreciate the efforts of Toei Animation in arranging such a respectful and heartfelt tribute.”
Sharing insights into his personal life, Nagamine’s family described him as “a gentle, warm, and supportive husband and father who continued to face his illness with determination. He remained motivated by the hope of returning home and resuming his work.”
They added, “While we mourn his loss, we are proud of his dedication to his craft, family, and life. We imagine he is now resting peacefully above the clouds, reunited with colleagues and creators, perhaps discussing new projects together.”
Addressing fans, they said, “To everyone who supported him, we extend our deepest thanks. We hope you continue to enjoy and cherish the works he contributed to. Today, the sky over Nerima, home to Oizumi Studio where he spent more than half of his life, is clear.”
Nagamine leaves an indelible mark on the anime world, remembered not only for his exceptional direction but also for his kindness and dedication. His creative legacy will continue to inspire audiences worldwide for generations to come.
