ECP starts preparations for general elections


ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is to hold a meeting with sensitive institutions including IB, ISI, CTDs of Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to discuss security concerns ahead of elections.

The meeting will be chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) today at 11am to deliberate on the security issues during the electoral process in both provinces.

Not only this, the electoral body is to also hold a meeting with the Ministry of Defence in regards to the arrangements for the polls.

The Inspector General and Chief Secretary of both provinces have also been called for a meeting next week, Election Commission sources said.

The sources have also disclosed that nearly 297,000 more security personnel are the requirement of Punjab for the elections and 56,000 personnel are required for KP during the polls.

Pertinently, the commission has been summoning back-to-back meetings with the concerned departments and officials in regard to the election arrangements in both provinces.

Notably, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has taken a sou motu notice of the delay in elections in KP and Punjab and ordered the commission to hold elections within 90 days.

Since the verdict, the commission has been making arrangements for the polls in KP, Punjab.
