SpaceX founder recently revealed his 9.2 per cent stake in the microblogging platform, making him the largest shareholder.
Musk confirmed his interest in the company soon after his tweet questioning Twitter’s dedication to free expression and asking users if a new platform was needed.
“Free speech is essential to a functioning democracy. Do you believe Twitter rigorously adheres to this principle?”, he tweeted.
“Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy. What should be done?” Musk said, adding, “Is a new platform needed?”
Since joining Twitter in 2009, Musk has amassed over 80 million followers and has used the network to make a number of announcements.
The debate over a Twitter edit button, which has been a long-standing user demand, was reignited on April 1 when the site stated that it was working on one.
While many users were pleased with the news, others questioned whether it was an April Fools’ hoax.
Twitter had already teased users about utilising the edit button. It had stated in 2020 that it will implement the function when everyone began wearing a mask due to the Covid epidemic.
“You can have an edit button when everyone wears a mask,” Twitter had announced.
