Baby celebrates first birthday after doctors said he only had a day

Doctors informed Marie Clare Tully, 41, that her son Hector wouldn’t last more than a day when she gave birth three years after a loss. The 23-week-old preterm baby has recently celebrated his first birthday.

“I’m so proud of him. He is a miracle, he is beyond a miracle and I am so proud of him. It is because of everyone’s positive prayers that he has been pulled through and we have made sure to surround him with all the love and joy and hope so that he feels absolutely adored. We make sure every day is great for him,” Tully told the media.

Hector has spent 259 nights in hospitals, according to the local media, The child has hydrocephalus due to “spinal fluid cannot flow around the body owing to a bleed in his brain,” He has chronic lung illness, retinopathy, central sleep apnoea, and a feeding tube.

Tully and Angus had extra challenges when Hector was born during the Covid-19 pandemic. They couldn’t visit their newborn in an incubator. He was covered in plastic and sent to resuscitation.

After 42 days on a ventilator, Tully’s delight was boundless.“When I heard, I let out a wail that came from the bottom of my soul, I can’t articulate it, it was the greatest feeling in the world,”  the mother told BBC Scotland.

Still, knowing the team thought he’d survive was amazing. Hector spent more than five months in the hospital and has had 15 procedures, according to the local media.
