Eight people killed in fire at birthday party in Iran

TEHRAN: Eight people were killed in a blast during a birthday party in a city near Tehran on Tuesday, according to the Iranian news agency.

As per Shahin Fathi, general director of the non-profit organisation Red Crescent Society of Tehran Province, the incident occurred at a typical coffeehouse in Maryam Town of Shahriar City.

As per preliminary investigations, a helium-filled balloon ruptured and ignited, causing a fire to spread throughout the cafe.

The victims, who included four children, three women, and a man, died of suffocation.
