South Texas mayor has been arrested, accused of bribery, fraud

A mayor from South Texas was arrested on Monday after a federal indictment accused him of bribery and fraud.

According to a statement from the US Attorney’s Office, Penitas Mayor Rodrigo Lopez was arrested when he re-entered the country at the Hidalgo Port of Entry.

Lopez is accused of stealing from the La Joya Independent School District in a two-count indictment. According to the indictment, the district made around $70,000 in purchases from Lopez’s company Xizaka LLC between March and August of 2018.

Lopez is also suspected of bribing a district employee in connection with the purchases. Lopez is expected to appear before a federal magistrate in McAllen, 15 miles east of Penitas, for arraignment and a detention hearing on Tuesday. Lopez, 38, has no phone number recorded in court documents, nor does he have an attorney.
