China’s military said on Wednesday that coordinated aviation operations with Russia over the Sea of Japan, East China Sea, and Western Pacific on Tuesday were not aimed against any nation.

China’s defence ministry said on Tuesday that the patrol, the first since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, was part of an annual military drill.

The drills took place in Japanese and South Korean air defence zones as US President Joe Biden ended a tour to Asia in which he enraged China by saying he would be prepared to protect Taiwan militarily if it came under Chinese assault.

In 2019, 2020, and 2021, China and Russia conducted such patrols, but only in the second half of the year.
