While snapping a selfie, a woman tripped and plummeted to her death.
On Tuesday, Zoe Snoeks, 33, and her husband Joeri Janssen were traveling in Belgium’s Luxembourg region when disaster struck.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, Snoeks was standing on the cliff’s edge when she lost her balance and fell into the Ourthe river dozens of meters below.
Janssen tells the media, “We only left on Sunday in our camper van.”
He added, “Since the pandemic, it was our little thing to drive across Europe in our van and take beautiful photos.”
They were supposed to leave that day, but they got up early to “take pictures of the Herou,” which Janssen ominously characterized as “great for photos.”
They arrived at the park around 9 a.m., and Snoeks asked her husband to keep an eye out for their dogs while she practiced her postures on the cliff’s edge.
According to Janssen, “I turned to the dogs and told them to wait.”
“When I turned back to Zoe, she was no longer there. She had just vanished. It must have happened in less than five seconds.”
He added: “I didn’t see or hear anything. No rustling, no screams or shouts. I looked up and saw only dust.”
Even when he knew it was futile, Janssen says he called out for her.
He said, “The chasm was several tens of meters deep.”
He had to go to a nearby hotel to get assistance due to the poor service. When emergency workers came, they discovered the victim.
Her fall was estimated to be at least 30 meters, but Janssen feels “it was more like 50.”
It’s unclear whether or not the inquiry into Snoeks’ death is complete.
As her husband stated, “Taking photos was her passion.”
He added, “I immediately unlocked her phone and saw that she had taken a photo on the cliff edge, her very last selfie.”
“Zoe is looking straight ahead. You can also see the mist and the river where they finally found her body.”
