Meta (META.O) has announced its plan to acquire Chinese AI startup Manus, aiming to speed up the integration of advanced artificial intelligence across its platforms.

Amid intense competition in the tech industry, companies like Meta have been boosting AI investments through strategic acquisitions and recruiting top talent.

Earlier this year, Meta invested in Scale AI, valuing the data-labeling startup at $29 billion and bringing on its 28-year-old CEO, Alexandr Wang.

Singapore-based Manus develops a general-purpose AI agent that can perform tasks such as research and automation independently, requiring minimal instructions.

Meta will operate the Manus service and integrate it into its consumer and business products, including Meta AI.

Manus launched its AI agent earlier this year, claiming superior performance compared to OpenAI’s DeepResearch. As part of Beijing Butterfly Effect Technology Ltd Co, the company has promoted its product by completing multiple tasks for users on X for free.

Recently, several Chinese tech firms, including Manus, have chosen Singapore as their base, aiming to reduce risks from ongoing Sino-U.S. geopolitical tensions.
