The Australian government on Wednesday advised its citizens to leave Iran as soon as possible due to ongoing violent protests and an increasingly unstable security situation in the country.

In its latest travel advisory, the government said that any Australian nationals currently in Iran should make immediate arrangements to depart.

The statement warned that violent demonstrations could intensify without prior notice, making the overall security environment highly unpredictable.

The advisory recalled that Australia’s embassy in Tehran had suspended its operations last year during heightened tensions between Iran and Israel.

According to the Australian government, its ability to provide consular assistance to citizens in Iran is currently extremely limited.

The warning also highlighted an elevated risk of detention for Australians, particularly those holding dual citizenship.

Australian authorities urged citizens to closely monitor official updates and prioritise their personal safety by leaving the country at the earliest opportunity.
