A man in a black tank top seemed to slip around 200 meters from the finish line when two of his fellow runners refused to give up absolutely tired and unable to even get up.

Although the New York City (NYC) Marathon is a highly competitive event, a few participants have shown that humanity is more important than victory.

In a touching video that has gone viral, two strangers are seen banding together to assist a fellow runner who falls only meters from the finish line.

The two are being hailed as heroes online as well, with fans cheering them on, and the audience supporting them on the entire journey

The 2021 New York City Marathon has been rescheduled after being canceled last year because of the epidemic.

One of the world’s largest and oldest annual long-distance running competitions drew a record-breaking 33,000 participants. And, while the crowd was ecstatic, completing the 42-kilometer course, which takes participants through all five boroughs of New York City, starting in Staten Island and concluding in Central Park, is no simple feat.

Andie Kent, a TikTok user in the audience, caught the touching moment, which has now gone viral and won hearts online.

Kent was quoted by ABC7 NY, “I hit the record button, and here we are. I was like, this is humanity at its finest, a moment I haven’t seen in a while, and I just thought people deserve to see this.”

According to the news site, the runner, named Jamel Melville, said it was a moment he would never forget, and he was affected by the choice of the two strangers to assist him. He went on to say that the crowd’s encouragement encouraged him to keep going.

Runner Craig Astreicher, who was running on Melville’s left, told a local news site that he had to quit since he knew the agony of not being able to finish the race, “At mile 18 I had to pull out because of an injury, I know what it’s like to not finish,” he remarked, referring to a car accident two years ago.

The generous action by all parties involved sparked much discussion online, with many commenting that the “act reaffirmed their faith in humanity.”
