The footage shows a swordfish attacking a deep water diver off the coast of Brazil without provocation.

Swordfish are among the ocean’s fastest and most powerful fish. Swordfish do not pierce or use their long sword-like bill as a spear, contrary to common perception. They won’t be able to reach prey lodged at the tip of their beak if they do this. Rather, they merely slash with their swords.

Killer whales, sperm whales, and sharks are among the few predators that prey on them, thus it utilises their bill to defend themselves. While stories of swordfish hurting or killing people are extremely uncommon, they do happen. A video of a swordfish attacking a man has surfaced. In 2016, a colleague diver caught the frightening moment when the swordfish almost killed the man.

A 5-foot-long swordfish strikes the diver’s oxygen tank and becomes entangled in the scuba gear as he wanders along the ocean floor 721 feet below the surface. To release itself, the swordfish thrashes frantically. While the diver made it inside the diving bell by climbing the guide rope, it was undoubtedly a close call.
