The future of the BMW M4 is taking two distinct paths. While the next-generation M3 will continue to be powered by the iconic S58 six-cylinder engine with twin turbines, the M4 is set to embrace an all-electric future.

The electric M4, codenamed ZA2, is expected to arrive after 2028, following the launch of the i4 coupe and convertible. There are also unconfirmed reports suggesting that an electric M4 convertible (potentially codenamed ZA3) could be in development.

On the other hand, the next-generation M3 (G84), which will still use an internal combustion engine, is slated for production in July 2028.

It will feature an updated S58 engine with mild-hybrid technology to meet Euro 7 emissions standards. While specific power figures are yet to be revealed, a significant boost to around 600 horsepower is expected.

The all-electric M4, however, promises to be even more exciting. Built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, it could potentially produce up to 1,341 horsepower. While such power may be reserved for larger models, the electric M4 will undoubtedly offer thrilling performance for enthusiasts.
