TomTom closes deal with Huawei

Huawei speed up in making its own operating system and app store, and now Huawei’s phones will have a mapping tool — courtesy of TomTom.

Huawei has reportedly reached a deal to access maps, traffic information, and navigation software from TomTom.

Given that the dutch company is based in the Netherlands, the partnership won’t be affected by the United States’ battles with Huawei and China.

According to a spokesperson at TomTom, the deal reached some time ago, but not made public until now.

The financial details of the agreement not revealed yet.

Dutch digital mapping company said it has closed a deal with China’s Huawei for the use of its maps in apps.

Huawei forced to develop its own operating system for smartphones, after it effectively blacklisted by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration last year out of concerns over national security.

This banned Huawei from using Google’s official Android operating system.

It also banned widely used apps such as Google Maps, in new phones.

The deal with TomTom means Huawei can now use the Dutch company’s maps and traffic information.

As well as navigation software to develop apps for its smartphones.

TomTom sold its telematics division to Japan’s Bridgestone last year to focus on its digital map-linked businesses.
