Businessmen urge ending political turmoil

KARACHI: Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) former vice president Sheikh Sultan Rehman has expressed serious concerns over the rising political confrontation and turmoil in the country, a statement said.
Talking to representatives of media in Karachi, he said that the no-confidence motion is a constitutional, legal, democratic and political process and the way to handle it is clearly mentioned in the constitution but handling it in a non-serious manner has made it a joke.
Both the government and opposition are claiming support of the majority in the parliament but at the same time calling for public mobilisation, giving way to political instability, he added.
Rehmand said that after submitting the no-confidence motion, the proper way to handle it is for the National Assembly Speaker to convene the session of the National Assembly as per procedure laid down in the constitution, present the motion for debate and vote in the House.
Both parties are disregarding this legal and constitutional procedure, as they have given calls to mobilise the public and planned to hold large public gatherings, procession and rallies, threatening opponents, which is further increasing uncertainty and fears of anarchy and civil war in the country.
He warned that the clashes between the political supporters will have very serious repercussions on the economy and the national security of the country.
He further said that the national economy is already in trouble with the historic high inflation, unemployment and massive devaluation of Pakistani currency which has already broken the back of the people.
The business community of Pakistan is gravely perturbed at this uncertain situation as the businesses are at a standstill, customers have disappeared from the markets and traders are facing serious liquidity crunch.
Rehman while demanding immediate end to the politics of confrontation in the supreme national interest, urged the government and opposition to cancel all public gatherings, processions, rallies and show of public power.
He further appealed to handle the no-confidence motion in accordance with the constitutional and legal procedure in light of democratic traditions in a peaceful manner in the parliament.
