According to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, the Ukrainian government is working on legislation that would declare English as the language of corporate communication.

“English is now used in business communication throughout the civilised world, so giving it such a status in Ukraine will promote business development, attract investment and accelerate Ukraine’s European integration,” Shmyhal wrote on the Telegram messaging app without detailing what the law would entail.

Ukrainian is the country’s single official language. According to a 2019 survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, around half of the population speaks largely or exclusively Ukrainian, while the other third speaks mostly or exclusively Russian.

Although English proficiency has improved in the country, which had a population of 44 million before the Russian invasion on February 24, Ukraine still lags behind some of its Eastern European rivals.

According to the multinational education organization EF Education First, located in Sweden, English proficiency in Ukraine is merely “moderate.” In 2021, the country ranked 30th out of 35 examined European countries, trailing Poland and Belarus.

Russian is widely used in industry and the media. Even though Russian is progressively restricted, it is still extensively spoken in several cities, including Kyiv. Businesses and other institutions are required by law to utilize Ukrainian.
