According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, drought conditions in Ethiopia have left more than 7.2 million people in need of food aid (UNOCHA).

According to UNOCHA’s latest drought status update report, more than 7.2 million pastoralists and agro-pastoralists in four areas of Ethiopia require food aid, according to Xinhua news agency.

Ethiopia’s drought-affected regions include Somalia, Oromia, the Southern and South-West regions.

According to UNOCHA, the East African country’s climate-induced drought is the worst in 40 years, with four consecutive failed rainy seasons since late 2020.

“The prolonged drought continues to compromise fragile livelihoods heavily reliant on livestock and deepening food insecurity and malnutrition,” the UNOCHA report disclosed.

According to the UN, Ethiopia’s persistent drought has left 4.4 million people in need of water aid.

According to the UNOCHA report, the impacts of the country’s chronic drought have included animal losses, with 2.1 million livestock deaths recorded so far. Another 22 million animals are thought to have died as a result of the drought.

According to the UNOCHA assessment, drought conditions are anticipated to spread to new geographic areas in Ethiopia in the next months, necessitating an increase in emergency humanitarian support.

UNOCHA said in April that the Horn of Africa region is witnessing one of its most severe droughts in recent history, with more than 15 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia facing extreme food insecurity.
