Chief negotiator for Network Rail says union talks are “productive”

- 40,000 Network Rail employees and employees of 13 train operating businesses went on strike for three days last week over salary, working conditions, and probable layoffs.
- Discussions are geared at preventing a recurrence of the strikes.

Following the largest strikes in the UK’s transport network in 30 years, the head negotiator for Network Rail stated that negotiations with trade unions have been “productive.”

Tim Shoveller reported on Friday’s edition of BBC Radio 4’s Today that the trade unions and our representatives have met all week. They’ve had a busy week, working on crucial aspects of the topics that we know are important to our coworkers, but also to us.
Shoveller stated that he was “cautiously optimistic” and postponed a consultation on proposed layoffs since “discussion is the best approach to reach an agreement.”

Discussions are geared at preventing a recurrence of the strike, which wreaked havoc on the nation’s transportation sector.
“The conversations have mostly centred on topics such as job security, efficiency, and deployment,” said Shoveller. “We’ve determined that it’s crucial to ensure that if we can achieve efficiency, the resulting funds will enable us to provide greater pay options.”
