In the aftermath of a devastating car incident that claimed the lives of multiple family members in a high-end area of Lahore, authorities in Punjab have escalated their efforts to tackle the issue of underage drivers on the roads. The incident, which shocked the community, has prompted a swift response from law enforcement agencies.

A spokesperson for the Punjab police revealed that a comprehensive crackdown against drivers under the age of 18 has been underway, with more than 19,000 underage drivers fined in the past week alone across the province. This is part of a broader initiative that has seen a staggering 81,000 fines issued to underage drivers throughout the current year. In addition to the fines, over 2,100 cases have been registered against these young drivers, reflecting the severity of the issue.

The crackdown has not been limited to fines and legal action, as authorities have impounded 3,500 vehicles across various police stations in the province. The gravity of the situation has prompted the Inspector General (IG) of Punjab to issue a stern warning to parents, urging them not to allow their children under the age of 18 to drive their vehicles.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has played a pivotal role in addressing the matter, ordering the arrest of individuals found driving without a valid license. This directive was issued during the hearing of a case involving an underage driver who tragically crushed six members of a family to death. The LHC emphasized the need for indiscriminate action, asserting that driving a car without a license is tantamount to handing someone a lethal weapon.

In response to the court’s directive, Regional Police Officers (RPOs), District Police Officers (DPOs), and District Traffic Police officers have been instructed to intensify the crackdown further. The collaborative effort aims to create a safer road environment and prevent further tragedies caused by inexperienced and underage drivers.

The recent incident has underscored the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to address the issue of underage driving. As authorities in Punjab take decisive action, it is hoped that these measures will serve as a deterrent and contribute to ensuring the safety of road users in the region. The tragic loss of life in Lahore has become a catalyst for change, prompting a renewed commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and holding accountable those who put lives at risk by allowing underage individuals behind the wheel.
