Following electric buses, Lahore is preparing to launch electric trams as part of its public transport system, according to a spokesperson for the Orange Line.
The government has ordered these eco-friendly trams from China to help make city travel greener. Each tram can run 25 to 27 kilometers after just 10 minutes of charging, making them efficient and quick to recharge.
These trams have three compartments and can carry up to 250 passengers at once. The first trams are currently being put together at the Ali Town Depot.
The new tram service will start with a free trial run. The pilot route is planned to run between Thokar Niaz Baig and Harbanspura.
During the trial phase, passengers won’t have to pay any fare. If the trial goes well, ticket prices will be introduced for daily use.
