New Vehicle Law Introduced; Check Full Details
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has introduced the KP Motor Vehicle Ordinance (Amendment) Bill 2025, allowing vehicle owners to keep their personalized registration numbers even after selling their vehicles.
Under the proposed law, owners can choose special registration marks, and these numbers will stay with them permanently.
However, if a registration number is unused for three years, it will be canceled. The bill also includes strict penalties for forgery, including heavy fines and possible confiscation of vehicles. To keep registration numbers active, owners will need to complete biometric verification every year.
Authorities will have the power to check and verify vehicles on the road to strengthen regulation. If an owner passes away, the vehicle will automatically transfer to their legal heirs. The purpose of the bill is to modernize vehicle registration in KP and give citizens more flexibility and security regarding their registration numbers.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Excise Department has also launched a new system linking vehicle registration numbers to owners’ ID cards. Sellers can retain their registration numbers when selling a vehicle, while buyers will be issued new ones.
Authorities are urging vehicle transfers before September 1 to avoid extra charges and advise contacting helpline 1035 if a sold vehicle is still registered under the previous owner. This new system is designed to build public trust and help law enforcement manage traffic and security more effectively.
