Kim Kardashian funds Afghan women’s soccer team to fly out of Pakistan

A month after Taliban swept back into power, Afghanistan’s women’s soccer team fled to Pakistan. Girls, who played for under-14, under-16, and under-18 teams, were given a warm welcome in Lahore as they landed on a 30-day visa.

As their 30-day asylum neared its end, the girls would have been sent back if no other country was willing to take them in. The girls and their families, making a total of 130 people, were flown to the UK in an evacuation flight.

Girls and the team landed at the Stansted Airport in London on Thursday with the help of a US rabbi, a UK soccer club, and Kim Kardashian West. It was Kim specifically who paid for the travel to help the girls fly to the UK.

Since the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, restrictions have been set down for women playing sports. The girls and their families will be completing a 10-day quarantine following the coronavirus SOPs for travel before they begin a new chapter in their lives in the UK.
