For the film, the director was just awarded Best Director at the DGA Awards. Campion addressed Elliott’s recent comments regarding her film during a red carpet interview with Deadline, calling them “unfortunate.” “I think it’s incredibly awful and sad for him since he’s got the trifecta of misogyny, xenophobia, and homophobia down pat. That bothers me. He was being a bit of a b-i-t-c-h, I believe. He’s also an actor, not a cowboy.”

Campion went on to say that the best way to resolve this with Sam is through a Western-style showdown, and that she’s ready to meet him on set with Doctor Strange to “shoot it out.” The filmmaker also justified her picture, claiming that narratives involving West have a lot of room for exploration.
