After four seasons, Killing Eve came to an emotional conclusion with a disputed final episode earlier this month, but it has now been discovered that a fifth was planned.

When series writer Kayleigh Llewellyn joined the team, they were planning for another series, but it appears that the global epidemic played a role in delaying its release.

It also meant that these significant decisions were made during the creative process, which she describes as “a big change” in the production.

“Well, when I was hired, it originally wasn’t going to be the final season; there was going to be another one,” Llewelyn told The Metro.

“That was a decision that was made during the process, so that was a big change.”

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the production of the series was significantly slowed, which influenced how it concluded.

“A job that would normally have been eight months became kind of two years,” she added.  “The world kept changing, and filming constraints changed vastly, as well.” says the director.

In terms of the ending, many fans were dissatisfied with how Eve and Villanelle’s relationship was resolved.

Characters that identify as LGBTQ+ are disproportionately murdered off in comparison to their straight counterparts, which means they are less likely to have a happy ending or a fulfilling character development.

Luke Jennings, the author of the Killing Eve novels, was likewise dissatisfied with the show’s conclusion, which he described as “a bowing to convention.”

“A punishment of Villanelle and Eve for the bloody, erotically impelled chaos they have caused,” he said. A really radical narrative would have challenged the convention in which TV dramas allow same-sex lovers to enjoy just the briefest of relationships before one of them is murdered off.

“How much more darkly satisfying, and true to Killing Eve‘s original spirit, for the couple to walk off into the sunset together? Spoiler alert, but that’s how it seemed to me when writing the books.”
