You can trace a clear line from Wesley Snipes’ Blade in 1998 to Adria Arjona’s casting as Martine Bancroft in Morbius almost two decades later, with Ryan Reynolds offering a helping hand along the way.

Originally, Snipes’ Daywalker was supposed to finish with a hint for a sequel starring fellow Marvel Comics vampire Michael Morbius, but that was scrapped. Instead, Reynolds landed a role as the Nightstalkers in the threequel Trinity, opposite Jessica Biel, who were supposed to get their own spinoff until the final product bombed.

The Deadpool star later worked with director Daniel Espinosa on the action-thriller Safe House and the sci-fi horror Life before teaming up with Arjona on Michael Bay’s Netflix blockbuster 6 Underground, with the actress revealing to The Hollywood Reporter that it was Reynolds who gave Espinosa a glowing recommendation.

“I went out for coffee with Daniel Espinosa and he told me flat out that I was too young for the part.” So I had to really urge him to give me a chance, and he said, “OK, OK.” I’m going to read you. Yes, of course.

“He then proceeded to read me. Martine exudes maturity and wisdom in the way she conducts herself. It’s not at all like the way I conduct myself,” she added.

“Right now, I’m sitting down. My foot is on my stool, and I tend to slouch a little bit more. So I think that’s what he originally saw and was like, This isn’t her. But I auditioned, and he gave me the role two days later. Then I found out that he called Ryan Reynolds and asked him, “Is she nice? Is she good to work with? ” And Ryan sent a lovely message. So I have Ryan to thank, in a way, for this role and for putting the good word out there for me,” she revealed.

If the supernatural superhero hit doesn’t receive a sequel, Arjona may regret Reynolds putting in a good word based on the overwhelmingly unfavourable reviews and sarcastic feeling of gratitude for Morbius that has swept the internet.
