Doctor Strange 2 is still a long way behind the last Marvel film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which grossed $1.89 billion in its opening weekend.

As the weekend draws to a close, The Wrap reports that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, directed by Sam Raimi, has now surpassed the theatrical runs of The Batman, the most recent huge superhero film to open cinemas.

The Northman continues to draw crowds, though its VOD release means that after this weekend, there will likely be little further movement. To far, the historical action picture directed by Robert Eggers has grossed almost 64 million dollars.

Alexander Skarsgrd and Anya Taylor-Joy appear in the thriller, which follows them as they seek vengeance and escape a terrible fate.

This weekend also featured the first results for Downton Abbey: A New Era, which earned 16 million viewers in its inaugural weekend.

The sequel to 2019’s Downton Abbey, which was a follow-up to the blockbuster television series that aired from 2010 to 2015 and became an international phenomenon, was released by Universal Pictures, a speciality production of Universal Studios. Across six seasons and fifty-two episodes, the sitcom follows the affluent Crawley family and their domestic servants.

Men, Alex Garland’s horror thriller about “toxic masculinity,” had a strong opening weekend as well (Entertainment Weekly). While 3.3 million dollars may appear insignificant in comparison to the large blockbusters, the film is a tough and polarising viewing distributed by A24.

For a fair contrast, consider the opening weekend box office for Everything Everywhere All at Once, another A24 release, which grossed 3.2 million dollars.
