Because the United States’ Supreme Court might overturn Roe v. Wade, which has maintained basic abortion rights lawful since its 1973 verdict, David Cronenberg branded the country “absolutely crazy.” According to a news source, he was speaking at the Cannes press conference for his film “Crimes of the Future.”

Cronenberg’s latest picture, which is a return to his body horror roots, is about “who owns whose body,” according to Cronenberg.

“I did write [the script] 20 years ago, but you could feel, even then, that this was coming,” reports quoted Cronenberg as saying. “A kind of oppressive ownership and control. It’s the constant in history … . That means, once again, the body is reality. You control people’s bodies — that’s speaking, expressing themselves, that’s control.”

The premiere of the film by the Canadian filmmaker took place on Monday, resulting in walkouts and praise from acclaimed actress Isabelle Huppert.

According to the news agency, the film depicts a sophisticated civilization in which “the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, and the body undergoes new transformations and mutations,” With the support of his lover Lea Seydoux, Viggo Mortensen plays a superstar artiste who shares the metamorphosis of internal organs as performance pieces.

Hundreds of people left the Grand Palais after the film’s Monday debut, unable to face the film’s brutal portrayals of physical horror.
