Meg Ryan will direct and appear in new romantic comedy called “What Happens Later.”

Meg Ryan is set to return to rom-coms, With her latest film What Happens Later.

According to Variety, the actor will both direct and feature in the new film, which is characterised as a “evolved and nostalgic” romantic comedy.

What Happens Later is based on the theatrical play Shooting Star by American playwright Steven Dietz, who also co-wrote the script with writer and novelist Kirk Lynn.

Ryan will star alongside David Duchovny in the film as ex-lovers Willa and Bill, who are reunited for the first time in decades after meeting in an airport overnight decades ago.

“What if late one winter night you came face to face with someone from your long ago?” states the movie’s synopsis. Someone who used to know your secrets because they used to know your heart.”

After directing and acting opposite Sam Shephard and Alex Neustaedter in 2015’s Ithaca, Meg Ryan will make her second picture. Bleecker Street and Ten Acre Films are collaborating on the project.

Ryan rose to prominence in films such as You’ve Got Mail, When Harry Met Sally, and Sleepless in Seattle.

“To be a part of this team, bringing such a beloved play to the big screen is a genuine honour,” said Bleecker Street CEO Andrew Karpen in a statement. We are extremely lucky that the movie is in the hands of one of her generation’s most talented romantic comedy actors.

“Combined with the talent of her co-stars and producers, we are honoured to be on this journey and look forward to sharing the experience with audiences next year.”

In other rom-com news, Jennifer Lopez returned to the genre earlier this year with Marry Me.
