The streaming behemoth has extended its breakthrough romantic comedy for two more seasons, signalling a significant vote of confidence in See-Saw Films’ acquisition.

The show premiered in April and quickly became a hit on the streaming site, which, like many others, does not provide traditional viewing numbers. The LGBTQ-themed young adult drama, which was inspired by series creator Alice Oseman’s webcomic and graphic book, landed on Netflix’s top 10 list in 54 countries.

Kit Connor and Joe Locke, the program’s stars, have amassed 3.4 million and 2.5 million Instagram followers, respectively, as a result of their roles on the show.

Heartstopper’s popularity has boosted weekly book sales of Oseman’s original material, with volume one now holding the top place on the US YA fiction list and appearing on the New York Times best-seller list. The weekly sales have soared by 1,700%.

Hearstopper has also been well received by critics, with the programme receiving a rare 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. (An equally astonishing 98 percent of viewers agree.)

See-Saw Films, a British-Australian production firm, bought the series’ TV rights in 2019 and negotiated a distribution deal with Netflix last year.
