Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, country music artists and fellow American Idol alums, reunited on Monday night for the show’s 20th anniversary special (May 2). Keith Whitley’s 1988 song “When You Say Nothing At All” was covered by the duo in a wistful performance.

As they crooned through the song, the judges were once again captivated by McCreery’s sweet southern drawl and Alaina’s powerful vocals.

In 2011, McCreery and Alaina made their debut appearance on the Idol stage together. Both competed in season 10 of the show, with McCreery winning the crown at the age of 17. Alaina came in second.

Both singers have ascended to the top of the country scene, collecting a slew of chart-topping hits and critical acclaim during the past 11 years.

The long-term friends talked about their time on the show before their performance.

“I was a fan of this show before I was even on this show,” McCreery said. “Life was pretty normal for both of us going to high school up until the show.”

Alaina added, “I loved American Idol so much that it was punishment for me to not be able to watch it. So, I’m excited to be back. I’m excited to represent our season.”

McCreery has become one of the most successful Idol winners, with four No. 1 singles in a row (“Five More Minutes,” “In Between,” “This Is It,” and “You Time”) and over 4 million albums sold. Alaina has received numerous CMT and ACM award nominations, as well as platinum-selling albums.

“You can’t turn on the radio without hearing Lauren, you can’t turn on the TV without seeing Lauren,” McCreery joked backstage.

“You’ve had a bunch of No. 1s now,” Alaina said. “He’s beating me.”

During their stint on Idol, they performed another classic country hit together – Randy Travis’ “I Told You So.” Check out their 2011 performance below.

McCreery made his County to Country festival debut earlier this year in London, Dublin, and Glasgow, followed by a sold-out tour in Germany and the Netherlands. Now, the North Carolina native is set to play across the United States, including a trip at the iHeartCountry Festival in Austin, Texas.

Starting this month, Alaina will embark on her “Top of the World Tour.”

American Idol asked a number of prior contestants and judges to help celebrate its 20th anniversary, in addition to McCreery and Alaina.

“Tonight we are opening the Idol Yearbook,” host Ryan Seacrest said.

Tamyra Gray, Pia Toscano, Anthony Federov, Brooke White, Justin Guarini, and William Hung were among the other famous guests.
