The comic is set to leave NBC’s Saturday Night Live after eight seasons as a regular after joining the Lorne Michaels sketch comedy as one of the show’s youngest-ever cast members at the age of 20.
The season 47 finale of Saturday Night Live, presented by Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll) and featuring musical guest Japanese Breakfast, is set to include Davidson’s leave this weekend.
The announcement comes just days after Davidson debuted his new Peacock comedy, Bupkis, on stage at NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation to Madison Avenue ad buyers. Michaels and his NBCUniversal-based Broadway Video are executive producers on the project, which is based on his life.
THR reached out to NBC and Saturday Night Live for comment, but they did not immediately reply. When/if an answer is received, this post will be updated.
Throughout its lengthy existence, SNL has consistently rotated top talent as many of its breakout performers went on to new ventures. In recent years, though, Michaels has demonstrated a greater willingness to give his in-demand performers time away from sketch comedy to work on other projects, many of which he also produces.
Davidson, who debuted on Saturday Night Live in season 20 as a relative unknown, has since established himself as one of the show’s greatest stars and an internet darling. (He’s dating Kim Kardashian, the social media star and influencer who hosted Saturday Night Live.) With films like the semi-autobiographical picture The King of Staten Island, Davidson has leveraged his popularity as an SNL fan to advance his career.
SNL usually announces cast departures and additions in the summer or early fall before the start of the next season. Kate McKinnon, Kenan Thompson, Cecily Strong, and Aidy Bryant’s personal lives have all been scrutinised in recent years. All of them have stuck with the show, though it’s unclear whether any will follow Davidson out the door. Thompson, SNL’s longest-serving cast member, recently collaborated with Michaels on NBC’s Kenan, which was just cancelled after two seasons. Bryant also collaborated with Michaels on Hulu’s recently finished Shrill, and the SNL executive produced Strong’s Apple comedy Schmigadoon.
The revelation was initially reported by THR corporate sister Variety.
