When it isn’t dedicating full sagas to a single character or side, Star Wars releases anthology adventures that explore many aspects of George Lucas’ space opera. Star Wars Visions gave us a distinct perspective on the galaxy as a whole, but the next anthology series is taking a different approach by focusing on a single group of individuals. That’s right, we’re returning to the days of the Jedi.

Tales of the Jedi, a new animated series set in the prequel period, was formally announced at Star Wars Celebration on Saturday. It will take a look at various Jedi at various stages in the holy order’s stormy history. In case you needed more reason to get thrilled, Dave Filoni, the man behind large animated tentpoles The Clone Wars and Rebels, as well as The Mandalorian and the impending Ahsoka series, serves as writer and executive producer on this project.

Tales is based on a 35-issue Dark Horse comic book series from the 1990s with the same name. It was one of the earliest attempts to flesh out the Expanded Universe of Star Wars, concentrating on Jedi who lived before the Original and Prequel Trilogies. This instalment of Tales is a collection of short stories aiming at providing some extra character work “in a way I couldn’t accomplish in Clone Wars,” according to Filoni. To spend the time between flights while filming Mandalorian, he wrote Tales screenplays. Co-producer Carrie Beck eventually asked if he could simply build the thing.

These films will, of course, include fan favourites like Ahsoka Tano, who will be featured in three distinct shorts spanning her whole existence. At the panel, one piece of concept art depicted her as a youngling practising at the Jedi Temple, while another depicted her fighting an Inquisitor. At the event, a 15-minute short film named “Existence and Death” was presented, which focused on Ahsoka’s early, pre-apprentice life. It also had sequences with her mother, who will be voiced by Janina Gavankar, the heroine of the Star Wars Battlefront II video game released in 2017.

Another character who will get their own short will be Count Dooku, who will be told of his relegation by decapitation before becoming a Sith. In each of his three adventures, Mace Windu and his apprentice, a young Qui-Gon Jinn, will be voiced by two Neesons. Liam will reprise his part, with his son Michael taking on the role of a younger version of the character.

The new Tales may not completely satisfy the itch that the original stories did, but they should do a lot better job of portraying the prequel period Jedi as awesome as the series wants you to believe they are most of the time. This fall, Disney+ will release Tales of the Jedi.
