Sam Raimi, director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, talks about Spider-Man 3 and defends the nerdy, symbiote-driven ‘Bully Maguire.’

Director Sam Raimi, whose next Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is nearing release, continues to defend Peter Parker’s famed dance sequence and dumb, symbiote-driven scenes more than a decade and a half after Spider-Man 3. These are the scenes that inspired the “Bully Maguire” meme.

Raimi was asked about the scene in which Peter dances along the streets of New York while possessed by the Venom symbiote in an interview with Fandom. “It’s hysterical to watch such stuff,” the filmmaker said of the gifs and memes at first. He went on to say that the moment was never supposed to be serious.  “It was Peter Parker’s version — this lame kid — of what it must be like to be his evil self. But he’s so whipped. He’s so out of it that that’s his take on it. And that didn’t go over well with the audience. But that’s what we were trying to do. So I’m not surprised that people… I’m glad people find it funny! We we wanted it to be fun.”

Tobey Maguire has never commented on the meme, though he did explain the scenario on the Spider-Man 3 DVD commentary alongside Raimi and his co-stars. There, Raimi and Maguire revealed that the montage around the sequence was added late in post-production, and that the street scene and the cookie scene, in which Peter eats cookies cooked by his landlord’s daughter, Ursula, were both unclear.

Spider-Man 3 was not intended to be the final picture in the series when it was released in 2007, but after the fourth instalment was cancelled, Sony Pictures rebooted the franchise with 2012’s Amazing Spider-Man. Spider-Man 3 received mixed reviews from critics, unlike its iconic predecessor. However, it was a hit at the box office, grossing $894.9 million worldwide on a budget of approximately $350 million.

Raimi, on the other hand, has previously stated that he disliked the finished product. Spider-Man 3 director Andrew Garfield said in 2014, “It’s an uneven film. I tried to make it work, but I didn’t believe in all of the characters, and I couldn’t hide that from Spider-Man fans.” However, this hasn’t stopped him from directing more superhero movies in the future.

When asked about returning to the fourth instalment in his Spider-Man saga, Raimi recently teased, “Anything is possible […] in the Marvel universe, any team-ups. I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible.” He later said, “I currently don’t have any plans to make Spider-Man 4… And they’re so successful with the new Spider-Man series that I don’t know if that’s gonna happen or not. I haven’t pursued that.”
