Shabana Azmi is an Indian actress in Hindi film, television, and theatre. One of India’s most acclaimed actresses, Shabana is known for her portrayals of distinctive, often unconventional female characters across several genres.

Shabana Azmi took a trip down memory lane when she shared a throwback photo from the 1976 Cannes Film Festival with late actress Smita Patil and film director Shyam Benegal. Shabana shared on Instagram how Shyam asked the two actors to find an audience for their film Nishant. She also told how his idea went off well, with a packed house.

Shabana captioned it, “At Cannes for #Nishant 1976. We had no publicity material and no money so #Shyam Benegal asked #Smita Patil and me to wear our best saris and walk up and down the promenade to attract attention.”

“And when people turned around to stare at these strange looking exotic creatures we would persuasively plead ‘Our film is showing on so and so date pls come to watch it’ and we managed a full house! That was the advertising acumen of #Shyam Benegal.”
