According to industry sources, Tom Cruise’s new film Top Gun: Maverick might have the largest opening of his career. Despite his celebrity, Tom has never had a movie generate more than $100 million in its first weekend.

According to rumours, Maverick may change that. According to some estimations, the picture might gross $125 million in its first weekend in the United States.

As per the report in The Hollywood Reporter, “Top Gun 2 is easily headed for the biggest opening of Tom Cruise’s career at the domestic box office, with a four-day gross of at least $92 million, according to official tracking. And that’s a conservative estimate.”

Added, “Many pundits believe the critically acclaimed sequel could soar well north of $100 million domestically, but tracking — one of Hollywood’s favorite pastimes — has become fraught in the pandemic era. Exhibitors are especially bullish on the pic, and are even thinking $125 million-plus.”

The highest-grossing Tom Cruise film to date has been War of the Worlds, which grossed $64.9 million in 2005. Even Mission Impossible: Fallout, his highest-grossing picture with $787 million, had a modest $61 million opening in 2012. But Maverick’s advantage is that it launches on Thursday in numerous regions throughout the world. If the $125 million estimate holds true, Maverick will have the year’s third-best opening weekend.

Such high openings are normally reserved for superhero movies, which is why industry insiders are sceptical of these predictions. Only DC’s The Batman, with $134 million, and Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, with $187 million, have debuted that high or higher this year.

Tom’s 1986 smash Top Gun is followed by Top Gun: Maverick. The film was essential in establishing him as a bankable celebrity, grossing $357 million on a budget of $15 million. He reprises his role as Naval aviator Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in Maverick.

Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, and Lewis Pullman feature in Joseph Kosinski’s picture. Val Kilmer, who played a supporting part in the first film, is also back. On May 27, the film will be released.
