Yasmin Finney of Heartstopper has been cast for Doctor Who.

The actress, who portrays Elle Argent in Netflix’s popular romantic comedy, has begun filming sequences as Rose for next year’s Doctor Who celebrations.

It’s no surprise that Yasmin is playing a character named Rose, given that Russell T Davies is returning as Doctor Who producer for the show’s 60th anniversary, as he also developed Billie Piper’s character Rose Tyler in 2005.

Here’s what Yasmin has to say about joining the franchise: “If anyone would have told 8-year-old Yasmin that one day she’d be part of this iconic show, I would have never in a million years believed them.

“This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself Russell, has not only made my year, it’s made my life. I cannot wait to begin this journey and for you all to see how Rose blossoms. Get Ready.”

Davies has also intimated that this Rose, like Rose Tyler 17 years ago, will be crucial to The Doctor’s fate.

“Life on Doctor Who gets brighter and wilder, how can there be another Rose?” the writer hinted. “You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the Doctor Who set. We all fell in love with her in Heartstopper, one of those shows which changes the world — and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!”

Ncuti Gatwa, who was recently cast as Jodie Whittaker’s successor as The Doctor, will join Yasmin in Doctor Who.

As if the prospect of a new Doctor and companion wasn’t intriguing enough, the BBC announced this weekend that David Tennant and Catherine Tate will rejoin in new sequences for The Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble.

Fans will recall that The Doctor put a mental barrier in Donna’s head to prevent her from remembering her TARDIS adventures, so what will happen when she runs across The Doctor again?
