The first thing you notice during Holidate is how many people are roaming around in malls, restaurants, and pools, all without masks on. People are having a great time with their loved ones during the holidays.

While exchanging Christmas gifts, Sloane (Emma Roberts) meets gorgeous Australian guy Jackson (Luke Bracey) at a mall. They quickly become friends and agree to be one other’s dates for the New Year and the remainder of the holiday season. They end up getting into mischief.

The picture tries way too hard to be a romantic comedy spoof. Perhaps that was the basic concept at first, but as the picture went on, the filmmaker seemed to lose sight of it. The chemistry between the lead duo is the one saving feature of this ridiculous hoax. Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey both deserve a better romance to show how fantastic they can be together than this. They make an effort to keep the proceedings moving along, but their efforts are hampered by the story’s and screenplay’s lack of depth.

To conclude, Holidate may simply remind you of how lovely your humdrum everyday life was before the pandemic, evoking memories of family reunions, mall romps, going out, and masks are worn only at costume parties.
